The Bangor Maine Police Department has one of the best public service Facebook pages in the country, and has some of the best engagement in the state of Maine for all pages. So when I saw a post talking about how the page was soon to pass 100,000 followers which is a really big deal for an organization in our area I got a great idea - why not congratulate the department by dropping off some of our signature dessert treats? At the very least I would be able to thank the hard working men and women of the BPD for their service, and if this pays off, it could be mentioned on their feed, exposing Governor’s Restaurant to thousands of people who aren’t our Facebook fans.
Well as you can see from the pictures of this post, this became a very successful tactic. The PD was very gracious and featured our gesture in a great post, along with pictures. At the time of this writing, there were over 6000 post likes, 300 shares, and 300 likes, along with many thousand page views. Of course, I shared the post on the Governor’s Facebook page, and I do know that over 9000 people viewed that post. This simple act of kindness generated a ton of awareness for my business, along with potential sales of our whoopie pie desserts to those who saw the post and inquired.
How can this translate to your business/organization? Well, you can’t force it. Keep tabs on organizations that are in need or doing a great job at something, and target them. This particular post had some viral aspects to it, but it won’t happen every time. A successful partnership will result in both organizations benefiting.
My Social Dig Podcast co-host Pat Lemieux and I talked more about this post and how I was able to take over the Bangor PD Facebook feed for a night on Social Dig #22 1/2. Please take a few minutes and listen.
